Haunting
This movie will stick in your head. Not just for the salacious subject matter but because it has those performances in it that can fly right over your head. Sure, you notice them, but it takes a few viewing to really appreciate just what they brought to the screen.
The movie is loosely based on the life of John Holmes, a famous porn star from the late seventies and early eighties. Best known for having an especially large penis and for a drug habit and ego that grew too large too fast, much of the results of which are chronicled here.
Anderson sets up not only his story but the stories of several other people around him, all of which are involved in the porn industry. Because of the nature of the business, most involved know one another and because of the fallout from the more conventional people in society, they've formed their own "family" in order to survive.
Burt Reynolds is subdued as the porn director who considers what he does just another genre of film and not just some way for people to get off. He earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for this role and it was well deserved. He is a delight to watch, especially if you are familiar with his other work where he typically plays everything over the top.
The females in this movie, while showcased as having troubled youths and personal lives, are also shown respect within the industry, if only by the male members involved. Julianne Moore turns in another great performance as an actress who takes her co-stars under her wing, acting motherly towards them as a way to make up for losing her mothering rights in real life.
There are a lot of people who didn't like this movie because it was either too loud and colorful or too dark and forboding. I think that speaks well to how accurately it was able to portray the porn scene of those years. We've all begun to embrace porn as a more mainstream thing in American culture, what with women who hate the industry still claiming that Jenna Jameson is a good business woman.
But in the end, there is a dark side to it. And when you want to watch people get off, you don't want the guilt associated with that to ruin your good time. The guilt you feel is proof of how good this movie is.
