PS- I had written this review of the movie on my old profile, this is my new profile. Thank you.
Classic story of Romeo and Juliet, set in a modern-day city of Verona Beach. The Montagues and Capulets are two feuding families, whose children meet and fall in love. They have to hide their love from the world because they know that their parents will not allow them to be together. There are obstacles on the way, like Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, and Romeo's friend Mercutio, and many fights. But although it is set in modern times, it is still the same timeless story of the "star crossed lovers".
If I were to explain this movie in a nutshell, I would say that it is a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet, using the old english language. I must say that the first scene of the movie is really really stupid, as it is the opening and it really sets in the comedy mood. Though a little bit ridiculous, the whole movie changes after this moment. I must also say that this movie, the farther you get into it, the better it gets.
The thing about this movie which really bugs me is the fact that the movie uses the old english language. It comes off as very goofy at first, seeing these actors use an old language like they do. I also like the fact that they use this because it keeps it original. I have read the Romeo and Juliet play over and over and it makes me happy that they kept to the original in this way.
I am very happy that I got to see Leonardo DiCaprio play a big role like Romeo. He actually takes the part very seriously and does a really good job. By the end, his performance is heart wrenching and you actually feel bad for him as a character. Claire Danes works well along side of Leonardo and also puts on a very captivating performance. Oh, John Leguizamo is awesome in this.
This movie is very goofy in little, stupid ways. The guns that the character uses actually say sword and dagger, which is a good attempt at comedy and it worked on me.
This new version of Rome and Juliet is not a bad film, its just stupid in little ways.
