There's dozens of documentaries about various sports heroes but "When we were Kings" transcends them all. Leo Gast created this documentary in 1974 but it wasn't unleashed on the public till 1996.
If you have any doubts about Ali then this documentary will surely bury them. We see Ali at his best a charismatic, passionate figure, who when drafted to fight in Vietnam stood up to the government. The documentary all leads to a the grand finale "the rumble in the jungle" possibly one of Ali's most defining moments in which he took on the huge George Forman and stunned the boxing community with the "rope a dope" technique. Michael Mann owes a lot to Leo Gast because without this documentary he would have no movie.
Ali is much, much more than a Heavy weight champ or sports star, he's an inspiration to generations and as my dear old dad always says "they don't make em like that anymore".
