Movie Review by Chris
August 22nd, 2008

TV weatherman Bill Harding is trying to get his tornado-hunter wife, Jo, to sign divorce papers so he can marry his girlfriend Melissa. But Mother Nature, in the form of a series of intense storms sweeping across Oklahoma, has other plans. Soon the three have joined the team of stormchasers as they attempt to insert a revolutionary measuring device into the very heart of several extremely violent tornados.

Nominated for two Oscars for visual effects and sound, Twister still remains one of my favorite disaster movies of all time. It had set a benchmark for future films to come and was huge on eye candy. For one of the first times on film, we see a full visual effects tornado, and still remains one of the most realistic portrayals in film. Starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, ever since the release of Twister, other low budget disaster movies like Category 7 and 10.5 tried to reenact the tornado scenes and each has failed. While the movie is short on character and at times can be unbelievable, the effects give us a good enough time to enjoy the movie.

Even in todays world of film, these tornado and disaster scenes featured in this movie will always be remembered. Even when were not visually seeing the tornade, the crew sometimes used a jet engine from a Boeing 707 to create the winds. When you make a film like this, you have to concentrate a lot on what the characters are going through from the wind blowing on them and debris a plenty. The film shouldve taken the win for the Oscar because every detail is done with great percision. We see all the dirt revolving around the actual twister and come debris is moving around the funnel but it all looks extremely real. Now heres a funny fact, the film was also nominated for an Oscar for the sound, but they actually slowed down the sound of a camel's moan to create the sound. I will never forget that sound and it also makes the movie more realistic.

Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt are two of the most well known actors in the movie, besides Phillip Seymour Hoffman of course. The screenplay writer and director attempted to creast character by having them be an ex couple. When Bill comes back, he asks Jo for divorce papers which she has not yet signed. So when they get a call for a tornado, they leave, leaving Bill to follow them and atempt to get the papers signed. Jo, along with Bills help, creates a sensor which is inserted into a tornado called Dorothy, but in real life its actually called 'T.O.T.O'. The instrument is used to help sense a tornado by computer so they can create earlier warnings for the citizens. Well Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt work together nicely, though they argue and do all of those things, they fit together fine and they both do great jobs with their roles.

Twister is an aersome movie which doesnt rely on character to much, but its fun enough and loud enough to become a favorite of mine.
