It almost gets it

Most of my issue with this movie lies with Skeet Ulrich, a guy who tries really hard but never quite gets the character. TOUCH is based on a book of the same name by Elmore Leonard, the man also known for inspiring the movies GET SHORTY and BE COOL. But this isn't the fun comedy, if that's what you were expecting.

It's hard to label, this tale of a young man who has the power of Christ. He can heal the afflicted with one touch and bleeds with the Stigmata. He's working in an alcoholic treatment center, but once people find out about his ability, the abusing of his powers comes into play.

Ulrich spends most of the movie looking pained instead of sad and troubled. It's a fine line for me whenever I watch a movie that I've already read the book to. I've discovered what I needed to about the characters and feel as if I know them already. I'm sure this taints my vision of what I think the movie and the actors within should be like.

However, I'll give credit where credit is due. This was a difficult book to market because it lacked strong guidelines as to what kind of book it was. The mere fact that they decided to turn it into a movie earns it some well-deserved credit. The fact that the book eventually went on to do well and that the movie got almost zero attention when it was released or subsequently also proves a lot to me as well.
