Movie Review by Jen
May 5th, 2006

Schizopolis was the last film we viewed in my "Introduction to Film Criticism" class this week, to end the semester, and it is already one of my favorite movies of all time. Soderbergh makes bold and fascinating statements about the way people communicate with each other in this sometimes disjointed, but still suprisingly very easy to watch film.

The film centers around Fletcher Munson, an apathetic speech writere for motivational speaker T.Asimuth Schwitters, who discovers his wife is having an affair with his lookalike, the smooth swinging dentist, Jeffery Korcheck. Within the film there is a subplot which gives a nod to the idea of filmmaking in general in the form of an interview and the enigmatic Elmo Oxygen, a character in the film's central plot who leaves that story partway through the film to pursue a more interesting film of his own.

The movie is funny and thought provoking, though it may take more than one viewing to fully appreciate it. It is one of those films that is experimental without coming off as aloof and elitist. You can watchi t many many times and still get different things which add to your understanding of this very thickly put together film. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in a movie that not only entertains you, but stimulates your mind and provokes thought long after you've turned off the DVD player.
