Movie Review by Andy
February 20th, 2008

I've always kind of felt that Ron Howard is the Frank Capra of our time. Frank Capra was an amazing director, but he never really directed anything but "happy" movies. Ron Howard is kind of similar in idea that most of his movies never go very dark.

Ron Howard's films actually vary on subject matter, but Ransom really stands out. In a career filled with films like Splash, Parenthood, Willow etc. a movie and a rich man trying to save his son from being murdered by kidnappers is different.

This is about the darkest movie from Ron Howard. If Ransom is any indication, Ron Howard can and should do darker subjects more often.

You also really see just why Mel Gibson is one of the best movie stars of all time. He relates to the audience very well. You like watching him. There are a lot of good performances in this movie, but Mel Gibson carries this movie.

Ransom is kind of a forgotten gem from the 1990's, but it's just that, a gem.
