Show me the... you know the story
I understand that over time it has become very popular to hate on Tom Cruise. I'll support those people who don't want to go see his recently released movies based on their beliefs that he's a wacko who doesn't deserve any more of their money. But I draw the line at people looking back in time and condemning pictures that he was in that they formerly would have said that they enjoyed.
One prime example is JERRY MAGUIRE. Much of the movie thrives on the great script and prime directing of Cameron Crowe, but a good deal of credit should go to Cruise. He's at the top of his game as a sports agent who is finding the bottom of his game. When Jerry has a thought in the middle of the night that won't leave him until he decides to write it all down and show it to his entire office, what was supposed to have been a powerful and positive move becomes the nail in his professional coffin.
Being able to take only one of his client with him, a mediocre football player with major inferiority complex issues, Jerry tries to do the best by him while still chasing after bigger clients. After convincing a quietly perfect Zellweger to join him in his new company, he slowly begins to discover who he really is as an agent and as a man.
Cuba Gooding Jr was once a great actor who had a great deal of promise. What the hell happened to him, I'm not entirely sure. I will say one thing unequivocally: he deserved to be shown that Oscar. I don't care what anyone has to say about that.
