If you're not in the mood for a chick flick, you might want to skip this movie. The biggest problem that I had with it is that it's one of those chick flicks which is told from the perspective of a male, those assuming movies which try to make women believe that there are men out there who are pining and thinking and other soft stuff like that.
In reality, there are two really good reasons to watch this movie. Well, three. This was pre-breast reduction surgery for Connelly, right before she broke our hearts, sized down the girls and then went on to become a lollipop actress. She's topless in the movie and for the men who are forced to watch this with their girlfriends, be happy over that fact. It was when she still seemed in love and proud of her well-endowed frame. Boy, how missed are those days.
The other good reason to watch this movie is Phoenix. His interactions with Kathy Baker (playing his mom) and Billy Crudup (his brother) are crucial, as are the scenes where he and Liv Tyler and communicating as friends. Overall, it is at times disappointing from the chick flick perspective since what women would like to see happen (love triumphing all and all that jazz) ends up on a severely bumpy road. But the movie is smart and well-written, which is rare for the old CFs these days. Perhaps that's why most people haven't watched the movie.
