Movie Review by Zara
November 7th, 2007

For the sheer hokiness of it all, I like this movie. As a whole, it's a bad film. There are still little parts here and there which make it enjoyable. I personally liked Brett Spiner (best known as being Data on the new Star Trek show) as the hippy dippy doctor.

But overall, there isn't much to remember about this movie other than the fact that it ushered in the grotesquely budgeted flicks with the insane ad campaigns. I remember seeing this movie in the theater on July 2nd, the first day that is shown in the movie's chronology. In real life, it was supposed to open wide on July 4th, but they did the special advance openings so that people would go all stupid gaga over it much like the people went all stupid gaga over the aliens arriving in the flick.

The other things that stand out in this movie to me are Vivica A Fox looking hot as hell as a stripper who doesn't take off her clothes to save the PG-13 rating and James Duvall from THE DOOM GENERATION (or better known as the dude in the bunny suit in DONNIE DARKO.) not that he does all that much, but I like the guy.

It cracks me up how much this movie affected people at the time. There was a brief moment when people really went apesh*t over this stuff and now with home theater systems being so nice and DVDs being so cheap to buy, the big bang budget stuff seems to have come and evolved ever so quickly. Faster than the aliens, that's for sure.

I remember watching the first trailer for this movie that didn't feature any of the major names of the cast in it. I thought it was great to see a big budget movie with no big-time stars, and then I saw that screen at the end showing who was in the movie and thought "so much for wishful thinking."

I had a thing for Will Smith at this time apparently, because I loved, like, every movie he made in the 90's...I don't get it so much now, but I just really liked this movie back in the day. I have a thing for Jeff Goldblum too...I think it's way he talks....I mean I still watch Jurassic Park just to listen to him talk. :)

I have more of a thing for Goldblum than for Smith. I couldn't get past his ears.

He's one of the few black men that I've had a thing for. I'm sure it's just because I grew up watching him as the Fresh Prince and he always has a sort of charm about him, plus he seems like a good guy. :)
