Breathtaking
And not just because it's evident that more peroxide was used on Branagh's hair then should be legally sanctioned.
This was a LONG movie. Long because it is an unabridged version of Shakespeare's original work. Every other time the tale of Hamlet was brought to the silver screen, certain portions would be rushed through or portions would be removed entirely for the sake of time.
Branagh is the MASTER in getting a Shakespear story told, and he gloriously eats up the screen as Hamlet, a egotistical and bratty prince who was bound and determined to pull down his family even if it meant destroying himself in the process.
The movie is excellently acted, filmed and has some of the greatest art direction of any Shakespeare work I've seen.
It's a love story to the play and damned if it isn't the most beautiful expression of love that I've seen done. (Well, aside from when Branagh made HENRY THE FIFTH.)

I just watched this movie and everything you say sums it up exactly. We're studying Shakespeare in school and I loved Branagh's performance in Othello and decided to give Hamlet a shot and I was not disappointed. You hear about Hamlet and can't help but let out a groan of disgust but Branagh brings excellence to the role and acts it well. I enjoyed it very much.
