"Oh you betcha, yaaaaa...."
"Fargo" isn't the best picture of 1996. It is my favourite, though. "The English Patient" and "Secrets & Lies" are both better films.
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen create a film that is like their others, but then is totally unique in its own way. Much like "Blood Simple." and "Miller's Crossing" in many ways. It's hard to find a genre for this film. It's a drama... and a comedy. But the subplots can vary between many different things.
It's a violent story that is also a kidnap caper, a midwestern satire, a comedy of errors, a suspenseful thriller and a tale of criminal misfortune. Yes, this seems like a busy plot, but it really isn't. The wonderfully developed characters make this movie great and hilarious.
William H. Macy plays Jerry Lundergaard, a car salesman who is having financial problems. He is desperate so he comes up with a plan. He is going to hire someone to kidnap his wife and ask for ransom from her wealthy father which will be split between the kidnappers and Jerry. Unfortunately for Jerry, the kidnappers he has hired are two bumbling idiots (played by an amazing Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare). Nothing goes according to plan; blood is shed along the way and Jerry begins to worry.
Marge Gunderson is the officer investigating this case and pieces together the clues to try and crack the case. Played extraordinarily by Frances McDormand in what I consider one of the greatest screen performances of the past 30 years.
The Minnesota accents make the hilarious dialogue even more funny. Joel and Ethan Coen have done it again creating a satirical masterpiece. This film was nominated for Best Picture in 1996. It won an Oscar for Frances McDormand; lead actress. William H. Macy was also nominated (supporting) as was director Joel Coen. This film won another Oscar for it's original screenplay, too.
Not to be missed. A cinematic classic.
