The Best Movie of 1996

This is an incredible work of art. Why so many people bash this film is beyond me. Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche are absolutely perfect and in top-form. Forget Pretty Woman or Ghost... you want a good love story, this is the movie. Almasy is a mapmaker and charts the Sahara desert during WWII. He meets a woman who he falls in love with and their secret affair is what keeps him strong. He ends up crashing an airplane with him and his love, Katharine, in it, killing her and burning him very badly. He is rescued and sent to a villa in Italy with a nurse. In this villa, he lives with his shell shocked war nurse, Hana (Binoche), a Canadian-spy named Caravaggio (Dafoe) and a Sikh sapper named Kip (Andrews). Almasy retells his story and in flashbacks we see one of the greatest romances to have ever graced the screen. Fiennes and Binoche both deserved Oscars, although Binoche was the only one who received one. Thomas and Dafoe were outstanding, also. Amazing job Mr. Minghella for directing such a beautiful film. This is the best picture of 1996 no matter what anyone says. A true masterpiece.
