Movie Review by Zara

The exception to my rule

The one and only time that I have enjoyed Nicole Kidman was in this twisted black comedy about a woman willing to do anything to become famous. Including having sex with a teenage boy in hopes of convincing him to kill her husband.

Kidman shows what I believe are her true colors in this, playing a conniving, vapid mess who believes she is entitled to be treated better than she is. Even after marrying a dumb mook (Dillon) who adores her as if she's his entire world, she's still not happy. Desperate to climb her way up the news ladder, she starts to work for a small station and gets a chance to run a special on teens in trouble.

During that stint there she meets three troubled, borderline retarded students who she is able to manipulate. Phoenix is good as the kid that she plies with sexual favors.

In the hands of someone other than Gus Van Sant, easier laughs might have been struggled for. Instead the director capably moves the actors through absurd and yet believable moments where you find yourself thinking that it might happen, but only if the people were truly stupid.

Then my girl Illeana is in the flick as well. That automatically ups any movie's cred.
