One Word: Norton
I remember seeing this movie in the theater and walking out feeling like I had been punched in the gut. It's not so much the story and it's not so much the lead star. It was the intense and surprising performance by the then-unknown Edward Norton. There really is no other great reason I am recommending this flick other than for him.
He went on to receive an Oscar nomination for his role as the altar boy on trial for killing a priest. The story is supposed to focus more on Gere, a lawyer who is willing to take on controversial roles simply because he enjoys the attention that he garners from representing them.
Over the course of learning more about Norton's character, he begins to really believe his client, something that he'd never done before in his history as a defense attorney. In his caring, he fights harder and discovers more about himself than he believed existed.
Then the ending comes along and... well, kicks you in the f*cking gut.
If you say you saw it coming, you're a damn liar.
