Movie Review by Tim
August 11th, 2009

Mr Holland's Opus was a let down.

Favorite Movie Quote: "I'm 60 years old, Gene. What are you going to do: write me a recommendation for the morgue?"

I caught about 20 minutes of this film several years ago but the burned copy of the DVD I had ended up being defective and I never got to finish it. I kept meaning to rent it so that I could finish it because I had kind of gotten into what I saw. Ahhhhh the wonderful world of downloading......

So first off I don't like this movie. This is one of those films that has the perfect opportunity to end several times and just doesn't. My girlfriend and I felt as if we had watched a 3.5 hour movie even though the running time is only a little over 2 hours...it just drags and drags.

You get to see an early version of Terrence Howard and a younger version of William H. Macy which you would think a film carrying these two fine actors would result into a fine movie......wrong.

I like Richard Dreyfuss in the very few films of his that I have seen and it was nice to see him take on a more serious role which I thought he did well at. The problem with this film is he is a teacher that hates that he is a teacher from the start but he has a love of music so strong that he starts really enjoying teaching it to children. Holland wanted to be a professional musician and instead got stuck in the suburbs with a baby on the way which turns out to be deaf. This in my opinion is were the film went wrong. The whole kid being deaf idea was just pointless....yea I mean I get it...he loves music....his kid is deaf....meaning he cant enjoy music....meaning they cant bond easily...but the chemistry or flow of the script just seemed jumbled.

Stay away...
