Woo Hoo!

John Woo has made some of the best action flicks around. Of course, those action flicks were usually made in his native language starring popular Chinese actors who would rarely would get a chance to grace a Hollywood screen unless they were playing a villain. Or related to Chow Yun-Fat.

In any case, BROKEN ARROW was Woo's second foray into American, English language cinema. HARD TARGET was his first and can be almost automatically dismissed because it stars Jean-Claude Van Damme. Featuring some nuclear warheads that are hidden in the desert as well as a menacing looking Travolta (smack dab in the middle of his "comeback" after PULP FICTION), this is a loud movie that manages to entertain well.

Christian Slater as the straight man for once isn't all that bad. Plus, this was the third time that he was able to work with his off and on girlfriend, Samanta Mathis. (Can anyone name the other two?) The two play extremely well off of each other, helping out the plot tremendously. Without Mathis and her wide-eyed expressions and glowing smiles, there just would have been something missing.

I highly prefer watching this to say... ARMAGEDDON. But then again, I'm biased.
