'Angus' is a great underdog story, and fulfills the desire I have always had to see the fat, nerdy kid walk away with the most beautiful girl in school. And that is precisely what happens. Charlie Talbert is Angus Bethune, a science whiz who happens to be overweight, insecure, and socially awkward. His only friend is Troy (Chris Owen), a freckled face redheaded hypochondriac with enormous ears. Angus is in love with Melissa (Ariana Richards), a pretty blonde destined to be prom queen; he has been infatuated with her since grade school, the same length of time he has hated her boyfriend, Rick Sanford (James Van der Beek), a star football player, obnoxious, arrogant, and mean. He thinks he is perfect in every possible way, and revels in his torment of Angus and Troy, and everyone else he deems as inferior to himself. Melissa has always ignored Angus, but notices him at the school dance, when he shows up in a purple suit, an atrocious eyesore, and delivers an inspiring, triumphant speech to Rick in the middle of the gymnasium, for every attending student to hear, a speech that brings together all the grievances people like Angus have against people like Rick. And then he walks away with Melissa on his arm, with the promise of future friendship, if not relationship.
Absolutely perfect are Kathy Bates and George C Scott as Angus's mother and grandfather. His mother is a truck driver with a distinctive CB handle, which undoubtedly is illustrative of her personality. She is supportive of Angus and wants to try and instill confidence in him, the same as his grandpa, a gruff old geezer with a defiant and carefree worldview. Talbert is wonderful; consistently likable and engaging, able to poke fun at himself and his physical shortcomings, and expressing a determination not to let an a**hole like Rick push him around or ridicule him anymore.
