The New World Edition

I remember the trailers for this movie back when they were shown on TV in 1994. The mood was set as a light-weight buddy comedy with a hitch: two guys and a girl. (Don't forget the rule of friendship always coming in threes.) Being that light-weight comedies are generally date-night fodder, my best friend at the time and I had some pretty large laughs over the uncomfortable shifting that was going on in many of the seats around us that opening weekend. THREESOME is definitely light-weight comedy. That is, if you're not squeamish about homosexual references, raunchy and frank sexual dialogue and Lara Flynn Boyle looking like she'd actually consumed more than 300 calories for the day.

It's freshmen year in college for Stuart (Baldwin), Alex (Boyle) and Eddie (Josh Charles). Due to a mix-up over Alex's gender, she is assigned to share a dorm room with the two men. Stuart is the precursor to Stiffler. He's loud, obnoxious, not-too-bright and a burgeoning alcoholic. Eddie is the diligent student who has yet to fully embrace his homosexual identity. Alex is the woman that all females can identify with: intelligent, strong-willed and yet emotionally needy with a dangerous penchant for consistently picking the wrong guys. Stuart wants to bed Alex. Alex wants to bed Eddie. Eddie doesn't know what the hell he wants to do.

I love this movie. As a reviewer, I'm obligated to explain why, but I wanted to point that out just for its own sake. Baldwin plays Stuart in a fashion that will make every viewer remember that dumbass horny friend that they adored during their young adulthood. Charles pulls off a performance that allows him to shatter the stereotype that not every gay male is effeminate or promiscuous. Yes, the movie is filled with the sex and sexual tension that most viewers salivate for, but it manages to be funny in the way that life tends to be. You laugh even when it seems like you shouldn't. You laugh because it's either that or go a little crazy. You laugh... because it's true.
