Underrated and overlooked

Perhaps it's because I grew up with an English teacher for a mother, but this movie really appealed to me. Watching a group of young people enrolled in the Army, classically having been put down all of their lives for being stupid and then learning to appreciate and respect language as well as Shakespeare was a wonderful thing for me to watch.

This was also one of the first movies that Mark Wahlberg was in, and although he isn't great you can tell that he's trying really hard. I will give credit where credit is due in the cases of stars who were first made famous in a different medium and do not ride that popularity assuming that it will automatically transfer over. While it's taken him years to really get a good grasp on acting, Wahlberg has steadily put in the man hours and paid his dues.

I can't remember if this was one of the last movies that Gregory Hines was in, but it's also refreshing to see him play a hard nosed character since most people associate him with a big grin and showman personality for being a dancer. He shines in the role of the uptight drill sargeant and is the perfect balance to DeVito. The scenes the two share are great.

If you haven't seen it and like a comedy which has a heart without being overly sappy, this is a fantastic film to check out.

I really like this flick. I though Danny De Vito was brilliant here.
