Movie Review by Zara
January 26th, 2007

Before Ben Stiller was BEN STILLER

I'm one of those people who was born at a time where I can claim to be a product of the '80's or the '90's. You know, that horrible generation known as X. This flick was the pinnacle of what was going on in the early '90's, complete with the upswing of casual sex (provided there was protection) and the false assumption that men and women can be friends even if one of them is romantically interested in the other.

Most memorable for its kick-ass soundtrack, I also enjoy the fact that this was one of the first times that I was able to enjoy Janeane Garofalo, even though her blunt cut bangs were extremely distracting. Working at the Gap as well. Eek. You almost can't picture it. Steve Zhan has a fun turn as the gay roommate and Ethan Hawke gets to play up grungy, sultry slacker sexiness full hilt.

The only weak point is the main one: Winona. She always seems painfully out of place (as well as coming off like a b*tch in real life for insisting that her boyfriend at the time - singer for that godawful band that sang "Runaway Train" - be in the movie) and never quite is able to get you to either like or hate the character. And as I'm fond of saying: If someone is indifferent about you, it's the kiss of death.
