Its June....what better time for a Christmas movie
Nora Ephron has delivered quite a few hit romantic comedies with "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle" which I loathe, but anyhoo...Mixed Nuts is quite forgettable compared to huge success of the Tom & Meg show in the prior year, and it didn't even make the theatres in the UK.
I watched this film for the first time Christmas Eve almost a decade ago, and I remember quite liking it, although this could have been attributed to spending the best part of the day on a pub-crawl, and I am sucker for a Christmas movie. There has been several viewing's since, during which I debate with myself what it was that I liked about this movie and after stumbling across this last week on cable it turns out the answer is 'not much'.
The film tells the tale of a failing good samaritan type call centre who are about to be evicted, then add a crazy pregnant chick (courtesy of Juliette Lewis) and her ex con boyfriend, a transvestite, and serial killer and you have it "Mixed Nuts".... personally I would have titled it "Bag of sh*t". This is clearly Steve Martin at his worsted and it is made worse by Rita Wilson whose hideous over acting almost made me puke, the only good thing about this movie was Liev Schreiber as the Transvestite which was the highlight of the movie as was Adam Sandler's small role.
In conclusion this film is great.... if you are sh*t-faced on Christmas eve, but under any other circumstances it is truly crap.
