Carrey at a bargain basement price
Made before ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE turned him into a huge star, THE MASK got Jim Carrey for less than his multi-million dollar paychecks for later films. They also got an actor who was willing to do a great deal of work and make a fool of himself.
The movie is the big screen debut of Cameron Diaz, at a time when she was a cute little thing with long blonde hair and no desire to try and play herself off as a serious actress. It's bizarre to see Carrey romancing her with the rubber mask on, so there are scenes that I just can't get over. (He too closely resembles a clown for my tastes)
It's not a great film but it's not a bad film. It's just a loud, blaring film that looks like a pinata threw up colors all over the place. A great venture for the kiddies, only mildly entertaining for the adults.

| I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain The Mask was released in the same year, but after Pet Detective. |

He signed on as Enigma right after Ace was cleaning up in the theaters and was able to command a much larger paycheck. But The Mask was the last flick that he didn't make a million or more on.
