Bite Me
I actually like stories about vampires. Just not the old school variety. One of my favorite authors, Nancy A Collins is famous for writing a series about a punk rock vampire by the name of Sonja Blue, so this mediocre ranking doesn't have to do with me not liking vampires. This just has to do with me not liking Anne Rice's vampires.
When I was in high school the birth of goth was going on around me. You weren't considered to be appropriately dark enough unless you were carrying around this novel or one of her other tomes. I wasn't in with that crowd but I managed to hang out from time to time with a few that were. Somehow I got lent a copy of this book. I wasn't impressed.
So I found it strangely intriguing when I heard that they were turning it into a movie with Cruise as LeStat. The fans were up in arms about the choice, given that this was back when Cruise was still a box office darling and not a couch jumping Scientologist freak. Being that I didn't give a crap who played the character, I was interested in seeing what he could do with it.
He's actually the best thing about the movie, although that's not saying much. I'll give Cruise credit for at least trying when it comes to his roles, even if he doesn't usually take much of a stretch in their diversity. Brad Pitt is a sad and utter waste, pouting instead of conveying the true heartbreak of Louis. While I might not have liked the book, I at least picked up on how the characters were supposed to play out.
This is also where Kirsten Dunst was thrust upon the world. Now if I could only get someone to take her back.
I give INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE an average rating because to me, there really isn't anything all that special to it. The story is boring, the direction is slow and the acting isn't any better than you'd catch on an HBO mini-series. Hell, the acting on HBO probably would have been better. Quick! Someone call the cast of ROME and schedule a remake!

| I wasn't impressed with the drab over the top design of the entire film....a little much. |
