Movie Review by Jesse
January 4th, 2007

A great start for Peter Jackson

This is the first time Lord of the Rings couple Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have teamed up together. They wrote the script to this haunting film which is based on real life events.

Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme met in school during the 1950s. Instant best friends, they proceeded to spend every minute possible together, often writing about a fantasy land of their own. More and more estranged from their respective families, the two girls realize that they are extremely different from most other people, and agree to take any steps necessary to ensure that they are not seperated. It is only when Pauline's mother notices their very close bonding and tries to separate the two girls where things become disastrous.

A brilliant cast of mostly unknown actors. New Zealander Melanie Lynskey was cast as Pauline. This was her first film and she gave a very true and believeable performance. A then unknown Kate Winslet was cast as the smart and imaginative Juliet Hulme. A terrific start for such an amazing actress. Sarah Peirse was terrific, also. She plays Pauline's mother, Honorah, and does an unbelieveably incredible job.

Peter Jackson makes a name for himself here before he goes on to make blockbuster hits like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong. He established himself as worthy filmmaker and worked his way to the top.
