You're STUPID! STUPID!
My dad was a big fan of Ed Wood, the director and subject of this movie. Wood was famous for being unfamous, a man who wanted so desperately to make movies and have them be appreciated by America. He was an odd little man with a fetish for Angora and dressing up in women's clothes, thanks to his mother having wanted to have a girl and dressing him as such when he was growing up.
Wood lucked out when he ran into aging star Bela Lugosi, played with such incredible aplomb by Martin Landau in this flick. Convincing the aging heroin addict to star in his low and no budget flicks and making him feel like the star that he'd been forgotten for being. Wood was the original and the best fanboy ever.
Burton has done a brilliant job in recreating the feel of those times, deciding to shoot and release the film in a rich black and white. The movie studios were concerned that no one would go to see the movie and they were rightfully worried. No one really did go to see the flick when it was in the theaters.
However, due to having listened to my dad go on and on about how great PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE (Wood's most popular piece) was, I was one of those people in the theater. In fact, I was one of those people who went to see it at its midnight premiere and got myself an ED WOOD shirt for attending. The funniest part was sitting in a nearly empty theater in Oxnard, California and hearing the part in the movie where Johnny Depp says: "Let's go talk to that nice dentist from Oxnard." Fantastic.
This is also one of Depp's best performances. I feel as if he was never properly acknowledged for just how well he did Wood since most people had never seen Wood's movies or any of the footage of him. We tend to laud Depp more when he creates a new and unique character rather than showcase how superb his mimicking skills are.
All around this is the best film Burton has made and my second favorite in his cache.
