'The Crow', deep at it's core is a poetic tragedy. A tragedy of love and violence, revenge and darkness. This film will always be remembered for the tragic death of actor Brandon Lee while filming 'The Crow'. There was a squid mess up in a deleted scene which caused Brandon a serious injury, later leading to his death. The son of legendary martial artist Bruce Lee will never be forgotten. 'The Crow' is big on it;s visual style and the fast paced action, which is in it's best style as the film nears it's climax. The film never fails to entertain and the pace is fine for an action movie.
The film is more then just an average action motion picture though, it tells the story of revenge and love. Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) is a rock star, he is an excellent guitarists and excels when it comes to anything music. His future wife Shelly is for everything he does, she wants him to live life to the fullest and never give up on his dreams. When a gang breaks into their house one night and rapes Shelly, Eric walks in on what could arguably be the wrong time. They then beat him and toss him out of a large window which is in his living room. He falls 6 stories to his death. Sarah (Rochelle Davis) is a little girl who runs the streets with her skate board. Her mom works at a local bar and is a major druggie. Eric gets his return though when a crow lands on his grave and brings him back to life, just to get revenge on those who destroyed his life.
Brandon Lee is surely the major highlight of the movie, though his death took place 8 days before initial shooting had wrapped, he is still in the majority of the film. Eric is a careful man, he took care of little Sarah, like her second family. As Eric returns back to his old home he gets flashbacks of the event, where his emotions begin running wild and the only thing that he thinks is going to solve any problem is by killing off the four main killer responsible for the death of Shelly. Brandon's father is a legend in both martial arts and film, so Brandon doesnt really have to live up to what his father had done. Brandon really knows how to handle such a role, as he doesnt let his emotions get the best of him and the scenes are at their best when Brandon begins talking about life and death. He then goes and visits one of the detectives which was at the scene of the killing, Albrecht (Ernie Hudson).
Albrecht quickly went from detective back to street duty for a weird unknown reason, but it's because he always seems right about everything. I enjoyed Ernie through the majority of the film, he is more of a comedic type then being thoroughly serious. Rochelle Davis is another one of the stars which really shines through, as she is a little punk skater girl, deep inside she is hurt by the death of her friends, some of her only friends. She gets more involved as the film continues, but overall she has a small and simple role. All she really wants is a friend, even a mother who will actually be there for her.
Alex Proyas is the director of 'The Crow', which seems weird since he most recently made I, Robot, which is more of a visual feast when it comes to the major special effects scattered around the movie. 'The Crow' is a dark dark film, it's also very violent, but it all fits the moods which reflect off the major characters. From the moment Eric is reborn, he instantly goes and begins killing off these thugs, starting with Tin Tin. The kills for the most part arent really inventive, but I enjoyed them. They always pack a punch, there were times when I felt the pain of what he was doing to these people. Stabbings and shootings, explosions and plenty of death around. There isnt much special effects, mostly on overhead shots of the city during Devils Night (a night on the 30th of October where fires are lit everywhere and the cities become darker then the night) and also a few digital shots of Eric running across rooftops. There also is an excellent soundtrack to follow, mostly goth rock, the score of the film is completely amazing. Though it really didnt get noticed be many, I found it to fit everything about the film.
'The Crow' is like a greek tragedy, a story of revenge and violence at it's best. It's a beautifully brutal movie which leaves an impact on us up to the final shot. Brandon Lee will always be remembered as the man who couldnt die, the man who wanted revenge, the man who wouldnt give up. RIP.
