Sandler before he was really Sandler
I don't know if it's because I was a girl who was into the hair metal bands of the late eighties and early nineties, but I absolutely LOVE this movie. A parody on what they went through trying to get noticed and signed in a time when music was beginning to shut them out of the system, it's a comedy that I will always pause to watch when it's on TV.
Three guys in a mediocre band try to get a radio station to listen to and play their demo. When going the regular avenues don't work, they resort to holding the station hostage with plastic water guns that were banned for looking too realistic.
The movie ends up getting the perfect mix in the band's members. Steve Buscemi as the long haired, dopey and somewhat violent guy reminds me of so many of my friends from back in the day. Brendan Fraser as the former geek who learned that if he grew his hair out long and started playing an instrument could get girls to pay attention to him also reminds me of guys that I once knew. And Adam Sandler is at his best in this movie, one of my favorite roles that he's done, playing the stupid drummer that all of the chicks fall for because supposedly the quiet guy is the mysterious, misunderstood one. What I learned is that he's just the stupid one. It took many years and many boyfriends to figure that one out.
Amy Locane also looks insanely hot and the other cameos by all of the other players, from Michael Richards to Judd Nelson to Chris Farley make this movie a highly enjoyable one for anyone who went to high school (or junior high) from 1987-1993.
