Not Bad, But Not Great
I've heard that Quentin Tarantino sold this script to fund Reservoir Dogs. You really feel his touch, but Tony Scott was not the right man to helm this one. Scott is a good man for the action film. The guy was many good films to his credit. Whether it be enjoyable fluff like Spy Game, a well-done military drama like Crimson Tide or a revenge flick like Man on Fire, Tony Scott always tends to deliver the satisfying action flick. True Romance is not an action flick. It's supposed to be almost a modern day Bonnie and Clyde. It's the idea of the truest love in the setting of brutal violence. It's a white trash version of Shakespeare. The guy behind Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Top Gun wasn't the right choice. He's a middle of the road director. It's not a bad movie. It has a great script and a killer supporting cast, but it's always in the back of your mind that the guy wrote it should've directed it. Also, Christian Slater sucks.....

| I think you totally missed the point of this film......True Romance is a drama / action ......how can you not classify this film in some sort of action drama with one of the best shootouts in motion picture history. It also has one of the "top 5 greatest dialogue scenes" with Hopper and Walken. I thought Tony Scott did a wonderful job directing and this was Christian Slater's best performance since Young Guns 2. |

| This is the only movie that I don't think Christian Slater sucks in. I love this movie. The music is incredible too. |

To me the biggest problem of the movie was the violence without style. You watch say, Kill Bill, and there's a lot of violence, but it's done with flair. Francis Ford Coppola put it really well about The Godfather. He said that violence is so common that for it to special it has to be given some detail. That's the biggest complaint about the movie. The scenes of shootouts and murder are no different than Scott's Last Boy Scout.
It's not a bad movie, but it's just not great. Like I said in the review, all the time watching it I felt like Quentin Tarantino could've done a much, much better job.
And I just find Slater really annoying.
