Movie Review by Melanie

The mind of a writer

You always hear the cliche that suffering makes you a better writer and I'm prone to believe it after watching this story. I usually don't care for Leonardo DiCaprio but he is definitely a good actor. His portrayal of a punk kid who has to go live with a new family and abusive stepfather is spot on. I especially enjoyed Ellen Barkin's acting as his mother. She hit on just the right amount of tolerance of abuse for the time but standing up when it just went too far. I watched this with my mother who commented that that was how a lot of men acted in the 1950s including my grandfather. It hurts to hear something so harsh about your own family but I'm glad I know. The 50s weren't a golden age for everyone and this movie shows you that.
