So I Liked It
In one of Mike Myers (Shrek, Austin Powers) earliest films (following the heels of Wayne's World's success) he showcases the fact that not only could he perform as the outlandish caricatures that made him famous on Saturday Night Live (in this case he plays his ludicrously hilarious Scotish father) but that he was also capable of more subtle humor that he's never been asked to duplicate as the main character, Charlie Mackenzie, a beat poet that is terrified of commitment.
The film is sweet but also hilarious as he thinks that his new girlfriend, Harriet (Nancy Travis), may be a black-widow-type serial killer. His best friend and police detective Tony (Anthony Lapaglia), tired of seeing his friend torpedo his own happiness, refuses to investigate her and convinces Charlie to let himself be happy.
Obviously there is something to Charlie's suspicions, but you'll have to watch the movie to know more. Suffice it to say, So I Married An Axe Murderer is a rom-com that tosses the genre on its head in a good and hilarious way. There are also great cameos by Charles Grodin, comedian Steven Wright, and the late Phil Hartman.
