This movie really blew me away when I watched it because I was still young and impressionable. I didn't know any high falootin' people in Manhattan and didn't understand most of the speech patterns that they were giving off, but boy did they SOUND smart to me.
Funny thing is, people who sound smart don't always translate into BEING smart. One rich couple are taken for a pair of fools when a young street hustler who's learned how to pass himself off as being Sidney Poitier's as a means of being welcomed into their home.
I think the movie is a striking (it was actually a play first, but eh..) example of the white man's guilt and how easy it is to manipulate that simply by being black and speaking in a manner which doesn't include a lot of slang. It's as if these rich while people are asking to be taken advantage of ... and you never feel sorry for them.
In fact, you cheer on Smith, wonderful as the hustler (although I might have just been wowed by his bravery to be portrayed as gay in a time when he was a popular family figure on prime-television) who does them all over.
If you haven't seen this movie, it's a great watch, especially to see the performer that Smith has molded himself into.

| The double-edged sword to Smith's portrayal is that, while being openly gay, he was not stereotypically gay. This is good to see because most gay men out there aren't flamboyant, just men who really like other men. The downside being that critics will say that Smith didn't commit enough to being a gay character because he didn't speak and act effeminately. They might even say he was too insecure to play it that way, but I feel he played the role the way it would have been in real life. |
