Movie Review by The Cinema Goddess
March 15th, 2007

Get A Band Aid...Stat!

I saw this film before it was released at a film festival at UVA; (the same weekend River Phoenix died.) I enjoyed the film when I saw it, but it was one of those films that I had to think about in order to write a review. Featuring an eclectic cast, especially Gary Oldman, who elevates any film he is in, this movie was in some ways ahead of its' time in pushing the envelope. Graphic violence, profanity and nudity and frenzied scenes are all here. Call it "Tarantinoesque."
Gary Oldman, who would star in "The Professional" in 1994, plays a similar character in "Romeo is Bleeding." He is ruthless, eccentric and thinks he has everybody wrapped around his finger. Until he meets Mona, played by Lena Olin, who would also go on to appear in a toned-down version of this character in TV's "Alias," she too thinks she is smarter and more cunning than anyone around her. In many ways, both characters are correct, which is part of the enjoyment of watching the film. Seeing Oldman square off against Olin was like watching two world-class champions meet to decide who would be the ultimate victor.
Though this is not a new release, I would recommend it to anyone who isn't easily appalled at often excessive and seemingly boundless violence, and for those who revel in a well written black comedy.
