More subtle crime/drug drama
Most people remember Pacino from movies where he's eating up the scenery, in things where he's yelling, screaming and holding a gun to someone's head. (SCARFACE, anyone?) But this movie hold much more of an impact based on the fact that it's understated.
The material covered is well worn and frankly, there really isn't much that can be punched up about it to make it more interesting or unique. But it's in Pacino's restraint, Penelope Ann Miller's acting done through the slight lowering of her eyelids, and the over the top performance by a normally withdrawn Sean Penn that make this one of the best crime dramas that I've seen, irregardless of the material being old.
Good stuff.
