Gimme Some Sugar, Baby
The third and (so far) final installment of the EVIL DEAD series, ARMY OF DARKNESS continued on in the pattern that the previous two were setting. The first EVIL DEAD was meant to be taken as a serious horror flick with dashes of quiet black humour. EVIL DEAD 2 upped the laugh factor while still retaining much of the gore. By the time that they got around to ARMY OF DARKNESS, the focus was more on the laugh and the fact that the audience watching knew and liked Bruce Campbell's character of Ash by then, toning down the violence to the point where it was laughable as well.
The reason why this movie is so good is because it's refused to age. Spitting in the face of time, it plays out the same to me as the day that I saw it in the theaters almost 14 years ago. True, the flick centers around Ash going back in time, so the aging process shouldn't have factored in. What I'm referring to is that the jokes are still funny, the site gags are even better (despite the fact that we're supposed to grow up with time and get over certain juvenile things) and Bruce Campbell could still ring my bell if he ever desired.
This is often referred to as being a cult classic, but if that's the case, it's a cult classic on the well known scale. While I know that it didn't meet expectations at the box office in 1993, it's had steady growth on VHS and then DVD after the fact.
And if you needed me to give you a more thorough description of what transpires in the flick, well... you might just need to get a boom stick blast to the face.
