And yet I'm still surprised she got the Oscar
Everyone I know watches this movie for one reason and one reason only. The near the ending scene where Marissa Tomei's character explains how the two men accused of murdering a convenience store clerk couldn't have done it based on the car that they drove.
It's a classic scene, one where we get to see an unlikely heroine emmerge. No one would think that a ditzy unemployed hairdresser who looks hot and yet f*cks Joe Pesci would have a single brain cell in her head. Yet it's her contribution to the case which makes every underdog squeal with delight.
Other than that, there are only a few other memorable scenes. Pesci and his interaction with Fred Gwynne as the judge in charge of the trial are the best ones, as are the scenes where Pesci's lawyer character finally comes into his own. Aside from that there are huge chunks of the movie that drags. The two men accused of the crime (one of which is played by the ever-youthful looking Ralph Macchio) are obnoxious and insipid. I honestly couldn't have cared if they ended up getting the chair for the crime, even if they didn't do it.
It's a decent movie but certainly not a great one.
