Tales from the Grassy Knoll

On a pure technical level, this is Oliver Stone's masterpiece. The collage-like editing is breathtaking, as are the stirring score (by John Williams, no less), the multi-stock photography, and period detail of the 1960's time frame. It is also packed with great celebrity cameos, with many of the performers playing totally against type. Where else can you see Kevin Bacon as a gay prostitute, John Candy as a sleazy D.A., and Ed Asner as a fascist right winger? Costner struggles with his New Orleans accent but gets the job done in a non-showy role. As for its rabid conspiracy theories, the movie plays way too fast and lose with the historical record in presenting its case. By all means see the film but by no means take all of its arguments at face value. For an alternate view, read Gerald Posner's "Case Closed" or see "The Kennedy Assassination: Beyond Conspiracy." Then draw your own conclusions.
