Movie Review by Joe
June 9th, 2006

Who would've thought this would spawn one of the most watched television series of all time?

While I have to say I absolutely enjoyed the series (watched them all recently with some good friends), I can't help but enjoy the totally B-rated movie that birthed it.

Before I review, I have a quiz...where can you find an ice skating champion, a former teen heartthrob who just won the lottery, a two-time Academy Award winner, a talented and respected actor, a former talk show host currently hosting a game show marathon, a man who married one of our best 'Friends', our favorite disgruntled employee, a man currently trying to survive a capsized boat, a former child star who has had some recent 'troubles,' and an actor who played a blind superhero all together?

Answer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 1992.

This movie centers around young Buffy (Sarah Michelle...I mean Kristy Swanson) as she is the most popular cheerleader in her school, but of course there's vampires, and death, and carnage, but as long as she stays looking pretty and destroys the vampires, it's all good.

I won't even go into the details of this movie, because I basically just gave the synopsis above. Instead I will spend the rest of the review talking about the quiz:

Ice skating champion - Kristy Swanson, winner "Skating With the Stars," starred as Buffy
Former teen heartthrob who just won the lottery - Luke Perry in "Windfall," starred as Pike, a man after Buffy's heart
Two-time Academy Award winner - Hilary Swank ("Boys Don't Cry," "Million Dollar Baby,") starring as one of the cheerleaders
Talented and respected actor - Donald Sutherland as watcher who protects Buffy
Former talk show host currently hosting a game show marathon - Riki Lake, making a quick, creditless appearance as a girl
Man who married one of our best 'Friends' - David Arquette (married to Courtney Cox) who played Pike's friend who becomes a vampire
Our favorite disgruntled employee - Stephen Root (from Office Space) appears in this movie
A man currently trying to survive a capsized boat - Rutger Hauer, currently starring in "Poseidon" stars as head vapire Lothos (too bad he couldn't turn into a bat in "Poseidon")
A former child star who has had some recent 'troubles' - Paul Reubens, better known as Pee Wee Herman, who stars as Lothos' assistant, Amilyn
An actor who played a blind superhero - Ben Afflick, starring as an uncredited basketball player

So many stars, who knew they all starred in the same movie? Bet you just got some newfound respect for this sleeper!
