(Not Quite) Bram Stoker's Dracula

This movie was quite a hit when in came out in 1992. Overall, it's a mixed bag. The title itself is quite misleading, since many elements of the original book have been twisted beyond recognition. In the book, Dracula was an evil parasite who elicited fear and revulsion but no sympathy. In the movie, Dracula is a misunderstood romantic who crosses "oceans of time" to find the reincarnation of his true love. Other updates for the modern crowd include making Lucy a slut (and possible bisexual), Dr. Seward a morphine addict, Mina an absinthe drinker, and Van Helsing a comedic boob. Gary Oldman sports an overripe accent, John Lennon glasses, and bad hair as the count. The less said about poor Keanu Reeves as Harker the better. Much more effective are the lush visual aspects and Gothic set design. You can see their enduring influence on everything from Nine Inch Nails videos to the Jack the Ripper flick "From Hell."
