The Bodyguard (1992)

Not Just Another Body To Guard
Well, Darlings -
I'd definitely say that the story behind the making of The Bodyguard is a far-far more interesting tale to tell than the actual movie itself. It really is.
Believe it, or not - The making of The Bodyguard goes all the way back to 1976. Originally it was a vehicle meant for the likes of Steve McQueen and Diana Ross. It's true. And, to make a long story short - It was McQueen who flatly refused to accept 2nd billing under Diana Ross and so, because of that, the whole project was promptly quashed and put on the perpetual back-burner.
Then in 1979 it was Ryan O'Neal's turn to be teamed up with (guess who?) Diana Ross. Well, O'Neal adamantly refused to work with Ross, too. (Can anyone blame him?) Apparently, it was some sort of personal animosity-thing between these two, something that went back a few years. And, so, once again, the making of The Bodyguard was put on the shelf. But, believe me, it was far from being forgotten!
Then, for the 1992 production of The Bodyguard, it was originally intended to be Madonna who was to be paired up with Kevin Costner. But, in the previous year, with the release of Madonna's 'Truth Or Dare' that, of course, changed that whole line-up, but fast.
If my memory serves me well - There's this one scene in Madonna's flick where Costner comes backstage to see Madonna after her concert. And he gushingly congratulates her on her show, calling it 'Really Neat' - Well, with Madonna being 'Madonna', she later makes some snide wisecrack about Costner's 'Really Neat' remark in her movie and, naturally, Costner sees this when Truth Or Dare was released - So, to make yet another long story short - It's exit Madonna. Enter Whitney Houston for her screen debut.
Oh! Wow! Like, what a story, eh? Believe me, this sort of thing is so much more interesting than the movie, itself, don't you think?
Produced on a $25 million budget The Bodyguard was an overall commercial success, eventually earning well over $410 million upon its release in 1992. But, critically, it was just a miserable failure, garnering for itself 6 Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including one for Worst Picture.
In The Bodyguard Kevin Costner plays a 'cold-as-steel' professional bodyguard who signs on (against his better judgement) to protect a beautiful Pop Superstar who has been receiving death threats. It all gets so cute and cuddly when these 2 go all lovey-dovey over each other. Ooh. Yeah. Kiss. Kiss. Hug. Hug. (Spare me!)
About the only time that this film actually comes to life is when Whitney Houston sings a song. But, then, of course, if you don't like Whitney's singing, well, I'd say just forget the whole goddamn thing 'cause, trust me, the rest of the movie is just pure overblown nonsense, anyways. It's true.
Anyhow - Ta-Ta for now. See you all at the movies!

| Yeah there really was nothing to see here, I did see it when it first came out; a movie for Whitney fans before Whitney got all cracked out. |
