Beyond the law (1992)

Beyond the Bikes
Decent little modern day biker flick with Charlie Sheen at the helm in what is one of his better leading roles. The story is a familiar one, albeit based on a true account. A young law enforcement officer with a troubled past infiltrates a motorcycle gang to bring its members and their leader to justice. He quickly finds himself more involved with the lifestyle than anticipated. Think Serpico without the corrupt cops or Cruising without the rough man love. Beyond the Law is relatively light on action though there is a little gunplay and fisticuffs scattered throughout. The real draw here is the well above average cast. In addition to Sheen, perpetual tough guy Madsen and perpetual hottie Fiorentino, we're treated to some of the finest character actors in the business. Courtney B. Vance, the always great Dennis Burkley, Leon Rippy in one of his funniest roles and Rip Torn in what is unfortunately an all too brief appearance. Based on my experience with In The Wind magazine, I'd say the extras are genuine bikers, not just yokels run through the wardrobe department. That gives the film an authenticity to go along with what is at times cheesy melodrama.
Beyond the Law probably won't change your life (though it might make you jealous of Charlie Sheen's hair extensions) but there are far less satisfying ways to kill 108min.

I might watch it just to see Charlie Sheen with a beard. I mean, I always found him a tad poncey...but with that facial hair, instant man!
PS: Sheen's finest moment is at the end of the credits following The Chase. |
