Sentimental Ol' Me

I don't know how I stumbled upon this movie, considering it was released around the time that I was in high school and trying to get my friends to dress up and do the Time Warp with me. Perhaps it was on cable. Perhaps it was playing at one of the movie Xtian-like homes that one of my friends lived in, keeping me around just to irritate their folks.

In any case, I fell in love with the simplicity of the story. A story which my mother filled me in later was real. It's glossed over in Disney style, but there really was a point in time when people would jump horses into little vats of water, usually with a girl riding atop them.

When a rebellious young girl comes along and makes friendly with a horse that doesn't seem to like anyone else, they become a big hit at the circus, jumping higher feats and impressing larger crowds. But after a tragic accident leaves the girl blind, her trainer and the man who has fallen in love with her decide to try and steer her clear of horses forever.

Gabrielle Anwar has such a sweet face that it's hard to resist her and I feel this is the best movie to witness what power she has in that face. I also like that it was one of the last movies that Michael Schoeffling did before walking away from Hollywood. It's one of the few movies that I would quite happily watch with my daughter (and more likely enjoy it more than she does.)

Funny, I was just thinking about this movie and how I really wanted to watch it again. My sister and I used to watch this all the time. Such a sweet movie.
