Movie Review by Zara
September 20th, 2009

Some movies bomb when they come out because people just don't get them. SHAKES THE CLOWN was one of them and for a couple of years after it was released on video, it instantly became a cult favorite. But now that nearly 20 years have passed since it was released, a lot of people seem to have forgotten just how twisted and fun it was. When it comes time to have a 20th anniversary edition of this released, I hope that it gets the attention that it deserves.

Bobcat is now receiving a lot of attention for making small, strange and funny movies, most recently with WORLD'S GREATEST DAD, starring Robin Williams, a friend of his who makes a great mime appearance in this flick. Watching this again, I was reminded of how great it was, even years after I'd last seen it. As a cult favorite, it has legs that keeps it fresh even though so much time has passed. SHAKES holds up better than most cult movies, seemingly just as new as it was when it was released originally.

A drunken clown who lives in Palookaville and dates a chick who works at the local clown bar and strives to be the next world class bowler, everything that shouldn't work about this movie does. The small cameos, from Adam Sandler as one of Shake's buddy clowns to a young and pre-surgical operations Kathy Griffin as another clown bar waitress who wants to be a famous and loved chef. She's loud and angry and everything that she's currently loved for on television and in all of her other endeavors. For those who think they love Kathy now, watch this so you can understand that she's always been the same, just never really appreciated until she was drug through the muck of Hollywood.

Again, this is just one of those movies that is weird and fun and disturbing and all around absolutely owns the title of cult favorite. Because if you don't get it, you're not a part of the cool cult, children.
