I cringe whenever I see an iron
If it weren't for the strong acting in this movie, I probably wouldn't have liked it as much. If they'd tried to hire on more popular actors who wanted to ugly-up for the roles, I would have completely steered clear.
As it is, RUSH is a deeply depressing movie about two undercover narcotics agents who are looking to bust a drug dealer. There isn't much viable proof that he's involved in the trafficking, so they need to go in deep in order to find the evidence that they're hoping to get. Going in deep includes using drugs so that the people they're buying them from don't suspect them to be cops.
It is the reality of the drug addiction in this movie that makes it so harrowing. Most movies that feature realistic scenes of addiction and withdrawl are lauded by critics and avoided by audiences. This was one of them. As time as progressed, there have been a few more stories which have gotten more press, but they are still considered to be an ugly mark on your favorites list. (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, anyone?
Jason Patrick is so good in the movie that it makes me overlook the fact that we had to endure that crap-ass song from Eric Clapton as a result.
