SLUT-GIRL GOES CHRISTIAN
Jesus, Las Vegas!
Does anyone remember MIMI ROGERS, the first real-life wife of TOM CRUISE? Does anyone care? CRUISE, apparently, married MIMI in attempts to quiet down the screaming public who were demanding, at the time, that CRUISE come out of his closet and show his true colors. It was believed by many that CRUISE was, indeed, a bona-fide Homo. With CRUISE's marriage to MIMI he proved to one and all that he was even straighter than his grandmother's dentures and all the hub-bub quickly quieted down. CRUISE's marriage to MIMI lasted less than 2 years, but who cared? No one ever squawked about TOM's sexual-orientation quite so loudly again. CRUISE had passed the ultimate test of proving himself to be a 'real' man.
Well, enough of TOM and his insignificant troubles. Let's talk about MIMI.
MIMI ROGERS' role in THE RAPTURE as Sharon is most definitely a complex and demanding one for any actress to tackle. Had ROGERS not been married to CRUISE at the time I doubt that she would have ever landed this role on her own merits. ROGERS plays a character who, by day, is a dreary, little, no-name telephone operator. But, then, by night, Sharon transforms like some nympho-vampire into Miss Sharon Super-Slut of the 90's. If you closely watch ROGERS you can easily tell that she's trying with all her little might to pull this role off, but she just doesn't have the acting chops to do so.
What eventually serves to deliver the final death-blow to MIMI's role as Sharon is when her character suddenly (over night) becomes a stereotypical, self-righteous Christian bore who ultimately murders her own 2 brats, all in the hypocritical name of God.
THE RAPTURE is rife, almost overflowing, with unintentionally laughable scenes and dialogue. The one scene that totally killed me, for instance, was the one where Sharon's Christian spirit is miraculously 'awakened'.
Here's how it goes.......Sharon the Slut is on her back again, being balled by one-of-the-many, when, in between pelvic thrusts, she just happens to glance over to the other slut in the room who's straddling some nameless nobody, receiving her nightly pounding. Sharon notices a ridiculously over-sized and super-phoney looking tattoo on this other slut's back and while the screwing continues these 2 tramps discuss the tattoo, which turns out to have some kind of mystical/religious significance to it. Empty-headed Sharon is instantly enthralled and taken in by it all. Literally, the next day Sharon is totally transformed (manners, clothes, and all) into the virtual likeness of some New-Age Virgin Mary, singing "Praise Jesus" to whoever she can corner into listening to her bull.
THE RAPTURE is recommended for Christian Wannabes ONLY!
Let's face it, Fellow Earthlings, Heaven and Hell are simply abstract concepts thought up by those in power as a means to control the ones who aren't. Heaven and Hell have no existence in the natural world. Don't get sucked in by THE RAPTURE. It'll only cramp your style.
