All he needed was the 'R'
MOTORAMA is a strange movie. I actually sat here for about 20 minutes, trying to think up one of my trademark intros where I talk about something similar to the storyline as a way of building up to my brief synopsis of the flick, but I honestly couldn't think of anything that applied. This is quite simply, a movie that has no discernable point or purpose. But hell if it isn't a damn fun way to pass the time.
The story follows Gus, a ten-year-old boy who has fashioned himself some stilts so that he can reach the pedals of a classic Mustang that he boosted in order to escape the crazy ramblings of his abusive parents. While on the road, Gus discovers a game called Motorama, which features cards that you collect when you purchase gas or other supplies from Chimera Gas Stations. Along the way, Gus encounters different measures of absurdity, the main recurring feature being that no one seems to question that he is quite clearly a child.
MOTORAMA features cameos by some of cinema's most recognized character actors and D-list celebrities, from Martha Quinn and Garrett Morris to Jack Nance and Michael J Pollard. There's even a brief clip of a 16 year-old Drew Barrymore as Gus' dream girl. Jordan Christopher Michael has an intense charm to him as Gus, to the point where by the end of the flick, you're almost willing to overlook the fact that he's only 10. The script is spotty, the acting is so-so, the production values are sub-par and yet the movie will stick with you for one simple reason: there's really nothing quite like it out there. Because of the sanitizing of our world, we're not apt to see another R-rated movie starring a pre-pubescent saying: "I'm only 10 f*cking years old!" Which really? Is quite a shame.
