Movie Review by Zara
January 31st, 2007

Big S, little A, little N....

I love when Steve Martin decides to write a movie. A well read man, he likes to throw in references that most people don't pick up on unless they're also well-read. Oddly enough, this movie was released not long after Mel Gibson's version of HAMLET came out, so there were people who were able to pick up on the references to the play within this movie. But the rest of it is a fun fantasy.

A weather man in LA where the weather never changes, Martin is getting bored with the self-absorbed people surrounding him in his life. He starts to crave something exciting to happen, anything. When he one day stumbles upon one of those traffic signs on the side of the freeway and it's talking to him, his life starts to spiral out of control. But in a good way.

He meets a woman who makes him smile. She turns out to be involved with someone else. So he pursues someone else (a really cool turn by Sarah Jessica Parker, prior to this role seen as being the geeky best friend and not the hot sexy chick that Martin allows her to be here), ends up winding around to the first woman again.... it's a delicious, crazy, mixed up mess.

I think that it might be more enjoyable for me to watch, having grown up only an hour drive away from LA. But I still like the fanciful love story, one that happens not only with the main character and the lady of his affections, but also of the lead and his MAIN lady: LA.
