Movie Review by Zara

Do it for the trees!

GREEN CARD is quiet, smart and benefits from the clunky appearance of a verbally smooth Frenchman. There was something about this movie that made me feel like I was watching a grown up romance, even though the first time that I watched this, I really had no idea what a grownup romance was.

A woman wanting to get into a good apartment with a nice green house decides to help out a French immigrant while helping out herself. The apartment building will not allow an unmarried woman to lease the apartment. So he gets his green card and she gets her green house. When the INS comes knocking, looking to make sure that their marriage is legitimate, the two live together to try and make sure they are familiar with one another. They fake a relationship, which seems like the most un-grownup thing to do.

Depardieu isn't what would normally be considered a sex symbol. He is a lumbering fool, overweight with a huge nose. Yet perhaps through the beauty of his accent, he becomes as sexy as a man could get. Faltering English and a respect for a woman who has no idea how to respect him until she's about to lose him also help to make him more appealing. The two stars are perfect together.

This remains one of my favorite romantic movies of all time. And they don't even kiss until the end! Funny how many of my favorite romances are like that.
