Perfection
I have a hard time answering the question of "What's your favorite movie of all time?"
That should be a hard question for anyone to answer. We should instead have a favorite drama, a favorite comedy, a favorite action, a favorite family... you get the picture. Movies bring more to us than what they are categorized as, sure. But there's something to appreciate in each genre and to acknowledge one seems to shut out all others.
That little diatribe aside, when I am forced to pick just one, this is the one that bubbles to the top. A love story, a tragic story, a story of hope and redemption. Based on old legends and yet encompassing newer times. Great acting, moving characters, and a fabulous script and direction style. A movie that can be watched by both men and women and yet can be claimed by neither side as being theirs. This is not a boys' night out flick and this is not a chick flick. It is simply a damn good movie.
*(One of my favorite bits of trivia about this movie: While it is not mentioned in the film, Parry's name is short for Parsifal, the "pure fool" and legendary knight of the Holy Grail. Parry brings redemption to Jack Lucas just as Parsifal brings redemption to the Fisher King Amfortas. Also, like Parsifal, Parry does battle with a Red Knight. In still another parallel, Parry experiences a cosmic awakening after kissing Lydia, just as Parsifal experiences a cosmic awakening after kissing the beautiful Kundry.)
* (My favorite quote from this movie: "I don't believe that God made man in his image. 'Cause most of the sh*t that happens comes from man. No, I think man was made in the Devil's image. And women were created out of God. 'Cause after all, women can have babies, which is kind of like creating. And which also accounts for the fact that women are so attracted to men... 'cause let's face it... the Devil is a hell of a lot more interesting! Believe me, I've slept with some saints in my day, I know what I'm talking about. So the whole point in life is for men and women to get married... so that God and the Devil can get together and work it out. Not that we have to get married. God forbid.")
This is the only film that I highly recommend ANYONE and EVERYONE watching.
