Norman!!!
One of the things that makes me saddest when I think about this movie now is that both Jack Palance (who one a Best Supporting Oscar for his role here and did one armed pushups when he did to prove he wasn't that old) and Bruno Kirby who was a close friend of Crystal's and had been in several films with him are now dead. Kinda hits you hard when realize that time goes by quickly and can affect people in different ways.
Which is sort of the concept behind this film. A man dealing with the nature of middle age, wondering if he is doing the right thing with his life. Joined by his two best friends who are in similar situations whether they can fully appreciate that fact or not. They join a cattle moving camp and end up assed out for professional helpers or even a cook. Their decision to move the cattle the rest of the way on their own is their glue in determining who they really are.
Seeing this movie in the theater when I was younger, I didn't quite grasp how deep it really was. As I've gotten older, I can appreciate it for the meaning behind it. I can also just sit back and enjoy the simple comedy and the tenderness towards a little calf, the scene in which it almosts drowns still touches my heart and makes me nervous even though I know the true ending.
A great movie. A great way of thinking.
